Program info
WinSPIRS is a Windows-based search and retrieval client developed by Ovid Technologies (originally by SilverPlatter) for accessing SilverPlatter/Ovid bibliographic and full-text databases. Widely used in libraries and research institutions throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, it supported local CD-ROM, networked, and Internet-hosted deployments. The software provides an intuitive interface with advanced search tools—such as Boolean and proximity operators, fielded queries, limiters, and search history—plus controlled vocabulary browsing (including MeSH) to improve precision and recall. Results can be viewed in multiple formats and saved, printed, or exported to common citation formats for use with reference managers. Administrative options allow local configuration of database menus and settings. Although largely superseded by Ovid’s web-based platforms, WinSPIRS is remembered as a robust, end-user-friendly solution for professional database access in the Windows environment.
